2023 was a somewhat quiet year regarding new vegan food at the Minnesota State Fair, but this year did not disappoint.
Kosharina Egyptian Cuisine
Kosharina Egyptian Cuisine is an exciting new addition to the fair, and their Koshari is worth a stop. Enjoy rice, pasta, chickpeas, lentils, and fried onions — and be sure to add their garlicky vinegar dakkah sauce!
Tasti Whip
Not only is it gorgeous, but Tasti Whip’s Mango Chili Whip tastes as good as it looks. A little sweet, a little spicy, a little sour, I would happily eat this every day if I could.
Dino’s Gyros
These little deep-fried Blazing Greek Bites are labeled with three peppers on Dino’s menu, as they should be because they are unquestionably spicy! They’re a mix of chickpeas, tomato, roasted red pepper, scallions, and cayenne pepper, so they’re full of flavor. The roasted red pepper hummus compliments the bites perfectly, but I could only manage to eat a few of them.
The Herbivorous Butcher
While I don’t work at The Herbivorous Butcher anymore, I will forever be a supportive fan, so you know I had to get their Raging Ball and Honey I Blew Up the Pizza Roll. The sesame ball had just the right amount of chewiness without being gummy. The inside is filled with a cheeseburger filling that has plant-based meat, cheese, and pickles but for some reason I really only got the meat flavor from it.
On the other hand, the pizza roll stole my heart, especially with the basil sauce drizzled on top. Chef’s kiss.
French Meadow
Shroomy “Calamari” is their new offering for 2024, and I wasn’t a fan. There was too much breading, and they weren’t served fresh.
Tot Boss
In all honesty, I was going to skip the new Dill Pickle Tots from Tot Boss, but they were on my sister’s “must try” list and I really enjoyed them! While there was too much salt, the dill flavor shines through to make for an all around tasty snack.
Churros & Aguas Fresca
I was craving a funnel cake from Auntie M’s but their line was super long. Thankfully, these churros stepped up to the plate and satisfied my fried bread with sugar craving. They come with caramel or chocolate sauce, but they’re delicious on their own (I didn’t ask about the sauces but assumed they aren’t vegan). I even tucked a few away into a container and air-fried them at home and they tasted good as new.
Another successful day at the Minnesota State Fair is in the books, and I’ve updated my Minnesota State Fair Vegan Food Guide. Feel free to comment with any new vegan foods that you tried this year — whether new to the fair or new to you!
For those wanting a fair experience without supporting the state fair, Twin Cities Veg Fest is coming up on September 22. All the food is required to be vegan, and they'll have speakers, cooking demos, and more. I hope to see you there!
