Review: Pig Out Bacon Chips
My friend Casey sent me a Buzzfeed article last month about vegan bacon chips made from mushrooms, and I was too intrigued to not try them. I only had to wait about a month as they figured out production and shipping for their first round of orders, and they stayed on top of communicating about the status, which is always appreciated.
Their branding is cute and fun, and all of the bags are marked non-GMO, vegan, kosher, and gluten-free.
Looking at the photographs, I had to laugh because the chips remind me of cornflakes, but I can assure you they taste nothing like them. They are crisp and crunchy with minimal oil. I would never guess that they're made from mushrooms.
Four of us tried them together, and overall we had similar opinions. Most importantly: they're super tasty. In regards to the flavors, we all agreed that Kansas City BBQ is our least favorite. I typically feel like BBQ chips don't have enough flavor, so I wasn't surprised.
We all liked the vegan cheddar, which is flavored with nutritional yeast, garlic powder, onion powder, and mustard. Chipotle is nice and smoky, and original is slightly salty.
I could easily eat a bag of these in one sitting. They're currently sold out, but you can sign up for the waiting list on their website, and they'll notify you when they're accepting orders again. I hope you can try them soon and love them as much as I do!
