What I Ate in LA
I recently spent a few days in LA, primarily to attend Vegan Street Fair. I have a huge sweet tooth, so I honed in on Charlie’s Brownies (above) and Your Vegan Friend’s Concha Bomb (below). The ice cream sandwich was a little tough to eat because there was so much ice cream, but it was amazingly delicious. I could eat Charlie’s Brownies all day, every day – they’re not too sweet and provide the perfect chocolate fix. There are other flavors, but I always go for chocolate.
My friend Lynda aka Plant Based Fat Kid has posted about the conchas from Your Vegan Friend, and I knew I had to have one. You can check out the Concha Bomb below in Vegan Fat Kid’s video, too. Like the brownies, it wasn’t too sweet, and it was filled with bananas and banana cream. It’s enough to share between at least 4 people and met all of my expectations.
When I arrived in LA, I went straight to Doomie’s with my friend Dave who’s organizing the first Kansas City VegFest, and we split a Vegan Fried Chicken Basket with Mac & Cheese and Animal Fries. It’s seriously the best vegan fried chicken I’ve ever had, and the whole menu is filled with amazing comfort food.
We were lucky enough to get a sneak peek at Cocobella Creamery afterwards thanks to a heads up from Janette aka VeganGirl4Ever. It’s basically right next to Doomie’s and the perfect dessert. I enjoyed Unicorn Magic, Toasted S’mores, and Cookie Dough. It was all so creamy and flavorful! They accommodate people with a variety of dietary needs, too. Everything is dairy-free, but they also have ice creams free from soy, gluten, and nuts. For me, it’s on par with Minneapolis’ Milkjam Creamery as far as taste, texture, and variety. Check out the shop in MsVegan’s video.
Janette never steers me wrong when it comes to food, and we headed to SunCafe for the last dinner of my trip. I ate there with her summer 2016, and it was just as delicious as I remember. We ordered a plate of nachos to share between us, Dave, Elana (Klean Slate) and Sierra, and my entree was the Italian Stallion pizza which was packed with all sorts of creamy goodness. From what I remember, there’s a vegan pesto and rinotta along with tomatoes and basil but I was too into it to pay close attention. The cold leftovers were just as good as the hot, fresh za. There’s something for everyone at SunCafe, and they prove that to eat healthy, you don’t have to sacrifice flavor.
While I’m perfectly happy with the vegan options here in the Twin Cities, it’s so fun to explore other places and try the local faves.
